Background – Pioneering Safety with Style

In a realm where the confluence of safety and aesthetic elegance is rare, Skipper emerged as a beacon of innovation. The journey embarked upon by Skipper, in collaboration with 4D Products, was not just about creating another product; it was about redefining safety management.

Their new Q post and base system, is a stylish and unique retractable barrier for public guidance allowing interaction with a range of existing accessories within the Skipper range.

With a vision to integrate functionality with style, the Skipper Q post and base system project was born. This venture was more than a challenge; it was a mission to elevate safety products to an art form, ensuring they complement the environments they protect.

Concept Design: Envisioning the Future of Safety

The inception of the Skipper Q post and base system was marked by a burst of creativity. The design team, fuelled by a passion for innovation and a deep understanding of the safety industry’s needs, embarked on a quest to conceptualise a product that was not only efficient but also aesthetically pleasing.

Through a collaborative brainstorming process, they sketched the future of safety barriers, focusing on a sleek, modern design that would stand out in any setting.

Design Development – Crafting Excellence

Transitioning from concept to reality, the design development phase was a testament to meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. The team delved into the intricacies of the Skipper Q post and base system, refining each curve and ensuring every component was optimised for both form and function.

This phase was characterised by a relentless pursuit of perfection, where every decision was guided by the dual objectives of enhancing user experience and maintaining design integrity.

With a design direction determined we advanced from 2D concept to a fully detailed virtual 3D Model. Weight redistribution in the assembly was key to the design ensuring it was stable when force is applied to the retractable tape.

The internal mechanism was carefully designed at this point to enable a slow retraction belt speed.

Prototyping: Bringing Ideas to Life

The prototyping stage was where the tangible manifestation of the Skipper Q post and base system began to take shape. Each prototype was a critical step towards realisation, offering the team invaluable insights into the practical aspects of their design.

This iterative process was not just about testing functionality; it was about experiencing the product, feeling its weight, its texture, and seeing its impact on real-world environments.

Using the 3D models, we were able to create a series of ‘in-situ’ photo realistic visualisations for Skipper to promote on their website. We were also able to experiment with a range of colour options before physical samples had even been produced. This increased efficiency in colour specification further down the line.

A New Safety Standard

4D Products supported Skipper in supplying appropriate data to enable the manufacturing process. A data pack was provided to initially help with production costing. Following a Design for Manufacture (DFM) review with the supplier, drawings were refined and fully detailed to support the tooling and production process.

The culmination of this ambitious project was not merely a new product launch; it was the setting of a new standard in safety management. The Skipper Q post and base system emerged as a symbol of how design and functionality could coexist harmoniously.

It represented a leap forward in the industry, proving that safety equipment could be both effective and visually appealing. This final result was a testament to the power of innovation, collaboration, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
