Laboratory Equipment – Uri Well

The Background

4D Products were commissioned to design a new laboratory device, which worked alongside the clients new urine screening machine. We were also tasked with supplying moulded components using a low volume manufacturing process.

The Design Phase

After receiving the brief, 4D developed a design specification in conjunction with the clients electronics department. A range of design concepts were then developed and presented as solutions to the brief. The device had to look like part of the new screening system, whilst ergonomically it had to be easy to use, easy to view, and easy to wipe clean in the laboratory environment. We designed a one piece enclosure with a self adhesive membrane panel finishing the top surface and providing the functionality as it is back-lit by the clients PCB, which is housed within.

After proving the physical geometry of the design using rapid prototypes, we selected the vacuum casting process to manufacture short batch runs for supply to the client. The quality of the part and its surface finish is equivalent to a high gloss moulded plastic.

The Result

The Uri-Well laboratory device is part of the urine screening system jointly developed by 4D Products and Mast Group. A beautifully designed low volume enclosure houses an electronics system that lights up individual LEDs to guide the user to specific samples within a 96 well plate.

A USB cable connects the device to a desktop PC and the larger Uri-Plus automated robot. The clients brand is enhanced by the inclusion of a back lit logo on the bespoke membrane panel. 4D Products supplies the enclosure and membrane to the client as part of their comprehensive product development service.
